Transformers Superlink

The Energon line was market in Japan by Takara as Transformers Superlink. While Superlink shared many of the same toys as Energon, Japan series had different paint schemes and even different molds. (The opposite was true for Superlink, not all Energon toys appeared under Superlink banner). Takara also released many specials box sets and exclusives toys for Superlink as they have always done for their sci-fi toy lines.

The Quest for Energon - a rare and potent substance that the Autobot and Decepticon warriors have battled over for eons - continues on Earth! The Decepticon forces have  struck a deal with Unicron: in exchange for new powers and forms, they will supply enough Energon to fully reactivated him. Now legions of Hyper-Powers Decepticons speed toward Earth, intent on controlling its Energon resources at any cost! Only an elite team of Autobots, empowered with the Spark of Combination can save the planet from total destruction...

Transformers Energon toys debuted in late 2003 as a follow-up series to the successful Transformers Armada series. Energon was second joint-venture Transformers project between Hasbro and Takara. (Armada was the first). Energon line focus was no longer on the Mini-Cons but rather on Energon - the power source which gave the Transformers their powers. The Autobots had new "Powerlinx" gimmick which allowed the Autobots to "power-up" by combining via the "Spark of Combination" instead of Powerlinx with the Mini-cons. The Decepticons did not have the combining ability, instead they get a new Hyper Power, a third mode represented by clear dark green parts. Beside these new power-up modes, the Energon toys also featured clear Energon Weapons powered by the "Energon Chip". These Energon weapons featured spring-loaded missile launchers and 5 mm connectors along with Armada Mini-cons "Powerlinx" ports which allowed for even more interchangeability.

In many ways, the Energon line was a lot like their ancestors series, New Microman and Diaclone, with a lot of combiners, spring loaded missiles, clear parts and 5mm connectivity. Takara Transformers Superlink (Japan version of Energon - see sidebar) even had a Microman figure in their line-up. (Takara used Microman 2003 body as basis for Transformers Kicker figure.) Personally I really think Energon / Superlink toys to be some of the best Transformers toys in quite sometimes, or may be I am just a sucker for clear green parts, 5 mm ports and the interchangeability due to my love for the Microman line.
